Mental health treatment is a process of care and
cure. The process is made possible by the relationship you and I build
together. We work together to solve problems, answer questions, and heal
hurts. The process belongs to you. I am at your service to help you
achieve your goals.

You may work with a therapist for as short a time as
six weeks, or for as long as several years. How long it takes for you will
depend on several personal factors, two of which are the nature of your
concern and whether the service you choose is counseling or psychotherapy. |

In Counseling, we deal with a narrow
range of very specific problems or concerns. You will probably
have a clear idea of what’s bothering you and will be able to
express it in words.
We
will talk about specific ways to make changes that will either
solve the problem or give you skills to manage it. This process
can be completed sometimes in as few as three or four sessions.
Usually it takes six to twelve sessions.
Therapy
deals with issues and concerns that are wider and deeper. You may
have carried them with you for a long time, or you may not know
exactly how to describe them. Perhaps you will only know that you
feel vaguely unhappy or dissatisfied with your life. Your
emotional discomfort may come from life experiences, or from
thinking or behaving in particular ways for a long time.
First,
we gently “unwrap” your pain, then apply a remedy and finally
nurture a way of life that will promote healing. This happens only
gradually, the way an illness or wound in your body heals. People
often stay in therapy from six months to two years. A term of
psychotherapy longer than this is exceptional, and is more related
to a kind of restructuring and sustaining of one’s whole
character or personality. |
